Harmony of the Seas can feel like a floating city with all the activities onboard. The ship bustles with planned events, swimming pools, sports, shows and plenty more. Your guide to knowing what is going on and when is the Cruise Compass.
American Harmony Departs on Inaugural Mississippi River Cruise
With a clean and uncluttered layout reminiscent of a modern European river cruise ship, plenty of space is offered for guests looking to relax and enjoy a day of scenic cruising. Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas is part of the hugely popular Oasis class of ships, the largest cruise ships afloat. The ship is almost a carbon copy of its fleetmates, which pioneered a "neighborhood" concept, with deck plans that group activities into different areas on the ship.
The ship's first drydock was a month-long project (April 2021) at Navantia Shipyard in Cadiz Spain. The docking was for routine maintenance works (done to cruise ships usually every 5 years) to keep them properly maintained. Harmony OTS's 2021 drydock included mainly technical works (propellers, fin stabilizers, bottom valves, hull painting) and classification inspection. The vessel was delivered on March 12, 2016, departing from St-Nazaire Shipyard (STX France) for sea trials in the Atlantic Ocean. A total of 6 tugboats were needed to get it out of the STX dock and into the Loire River estuary.

In comparison to the sisterships Allure and Oasis, Harmony OTS is heavier by 1700+ tons, 3+ meters wider, and able to accommodate 100 more passengers. Guests with mobility issues will find that Harmony of the Seas has wheelchair-accessible cabins in many categories that include wider doors, turning space, and furniture built for convenience. The champagne bowl slide swirls riders round prior to the end of the slide. This slide starts off as a typical water slide, but guests enter a large bowl area, where they can loop around a few times before exiting the slide.
The second vessel in American Cruise Line's "modern riverboat" series, American Harmony eschews the Mark Twain-esque aspects that have traditionally characterized Mississippi River cruises. Gone are the paddlewheel propulsion and the traditional Victorian-era riverboat design, replaced instead with something that more closely resembles a modern coastal cruise ship. An additional part of the onboard kids' programming is the YouTube show "Muffalo Potato," teaching kids to draw anything using just letters and numbers. At first glance, the party hearty vibe of a Carnival cruise might not jibe with visions of romance. And let's face it, weddings can be more stressful than you think. Carnival is the perfect environment to be able to cut loose, with just the two of you. If you're looking to do the Big Day onboard, the line has several packages to choose from.

All you have to do is go to My Cruises and then log in (register an account if you have not done so already). A few clicks later and you should be able to reserve your entertainment. Guests can enjoy one of the greatest Broadway musicals of all time, Grease, in the Royal Theater. This is the full Broadway production, complete with intermission. In addition, the original Royal Caribbean production show, "Columbus, The Musical" is also shown in the Royal Theater, along with other headliner acts.
Every night, dinner was incredibly fast - faster than other ships I have recently been on. This hasn’t always been the case on other Royal Caribbean cruises. The dress code on the Harmony of the Seas is casual for the most part. During the day, anything goes, though cover-ups or shirts and shoes are required for indoor dining -- and indoor spaces, in general. The dinner dress code calls for "Resort casual," which for women means dresses or skirts, capris or slacks and blouses. For men, khakis or dress pants paired with button-down or collared shirts work.
The cruise line offers a gift registry that applies to these packages, as well as to shore excursions. While Oceania does not make a big effort to attract honeymooners, its mature (50 and older) passengers flock to the line for the aforementioned understated trips and affordable luxury. And, even if there are no rose-petals-on-the-bed packages, you'll find plenty of romantic spots onboard these cozy and intimate ships.
Ship's godmother was Brittany Affolter - a 23-year-old "Teach for America" educator in Miami-Dade, who won a contest with over 1000 nominees. The naming ceremony featured a robotic performance at the ship’s Aqua Theater. It activated a robot bartender, which punched a second button to release the bottle of champagne rigged to the onboard zip-line. The 1-m high bottle (custom-made Veuve Clicquot champagne) whizzed down the zip-line and crashed into a steel plate above the swimming pool. On May 12, 2016, RCCL-Royal Caribbean officially took ship's delivery. The inaugural cruise (maiden voyage) was on May 22 (4-day roundtrip from Southampton to Rotterdam).
